Things are looking up! The replacement DIMM arrived today (pc2-5300) and with this installed along side the PC2-6400 I now have the full 4GB I expected. I could go to 6GB in this machine, but the 4GB PC2 SODIMMs are rather pricey, and for the basic usage I have in mind 4GB should be more than sufficient.
I found an upper case panel on eBay, and as I was the only bidder my purchase price (not including shipping) was less than a dollar and should spiff up the appearance quite a bit. A little metalwork will be warranted on the lower case, mostly just restoring the shell to its original shape. This computer has had a rough life from all indications, beaten to hell by a college student. The tricky part will be finding replacements for the missing screws that hold down the front of the upper case.
Last week I used headphones whilst in the library, and afterwards found that the speakers no longer functioned. Apparently there is a switch in the headphone port that toggles between the various audio output, and it was stuck, probably from a lack of use. Repeatedly plugging and unplugging a cord into that jack brought things back to normal.
I still have an issue where my palm touches the trackpad and repositions the cursor, something especially annoying when typing. This is probably common to many a computer, so I can’t really blame anyone for this. Perhaps if the trackpad was smaller I wouldn’t be touching it so often, or perhaps my hand position when typing is not ideal. Another thrift store find, a Dell Bluetooth mouse, made this issue a little easier to deal with once I set the computer to disable the trackpad if an external mouse is attached.

Happy for you! Did you also research a replacement battery for your machine?
I have an old MacBook but Apple no longer has any. Want to give mine to a friend but not with a dead battery. Any ideas what’s the BEST replacement, not the cheapest but BEST battery I can buy? Thanks for your input in advance. ENJOY your summer!

I did a little research on batteries, and even asked on a Mac swap list for an older one for sale. The recommendation I received was that a used battery is a gamble and was probably mistreated so don’t do it. I’m currently running without one installed, depending solely on the AC adapter. I’m still not sure if the cheap battery that was in the machine caused the death of the cheap AC adapter I purchased or if it was purely coincidental, but at this point I don’t want to risk destroying another AC adapter, having spent $50 to get a genuine Apple one this time around.
At this point I’ll be looking for a genuine Apple part, knowing that they’ll stand behind it if something goes awry, and I’d recommend the same to others. I’ll probably give the Low End Mac swap list another go, this time asking for new instead of used on the off chance that someone has something laying around. Perhaps eBay as well. Today the new upper case panel arrived, but I was just leaving the house so didn’t have a chance to install it. It was a new part that had been laying around awhile, and other than a little dent on the left side of the trackpad it looks fine. I’m sure it will be better than the scuffed and worn one I have now, and that small dent will match nicely with the other miscellaneous dents on the rest of the case...

Thank you for your effort on my behalf re: the MacBook battery. Will ask another friend into older machines what he recommends. Thank you very much again. Trust your parts which just arrived are exactly what you have expected. Good luck with the rest of the upgrade work.
